Our main topic this term is How Does My Body Work? We will be asking how the organs inside our bodies function to keep us alive.
Understanding how bodies work has a clear link to both Science and Health & Wellbeing. Leaning about the skeleton, teeth and internal organs builds scientific knowledge about living things and supports understanding of basic concepts like movement, nutrition, and body systems. We will be increasing our knowledge about how the human body works and practising our enquiry skills e.g. what happens when we exercise? We will begin to see why we need healthy food, why we should brush our teeth and why exercise is important. This will hopefully lead to better self-care habits and a clear awareness of how to keep our bodies healthy. Knowing how we function ensures that we are aware of our needs and feelings. Being able to express these will build confidence and healthy attitudes about personal identity and belonging. This topic has a strong, direct link to supporting wellbeing by being confident in our understanding of our own bodies and learning how to stay physically and mentally fit for life! ![]()
This term, we are reading George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl and also exploring a range of non-fiction books – all linked to our topic. We’ll be writing different styles e.g. stories, instructions, autobiography, fact-files and book reviews.
In PHSE we will look at ‘Relationships,’ ‘Changing Me’ and being good digital citizens by keeping safe online.
Maths will focus on fractions, money, symmetry, 3D shape, area and capacity & volume, as well as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
In June, we will have a Financial Literacy Week.
Please revise times tables, money and telling the time with both digital and analogue clocks at home, whenever you have chance.
We have two brilliant events booked! In March, we will take part in an online, virtual workshop with TECHNIQUEST - The Human Body Show. We all start life smaller than a full stop, but how do we change over time? We will explore the human body from the longest and smallest bones to the functions of our organs. We will understand our heartbeat, see the amount of air we breathe and find out what we can do to keep our bodies healthy in this interactive show.
In May, St John Ambulance will visit and we take part in a first aid workshop, learning when and how to administer CPR. We will receive a certificate too!
For the last couple of weeks of this term, we will be learning about Landmarks of Cardiff Bay, exploring which buildings in Cardiff Bay are important and why they are special to Wales! We will focus on Wale Millennium Centre and the Senedd. Learning about these two significant buildings will foster the children’s sense of Cynefin to help them feel connected to Wales and its capital city, as well as our people, history and culture. They show different aspects of what makes Wales feel like our home.
