Welcome back to the Summer term! We are all very excited to see how much progress the children have made this term!
This term our topic is, 'exploration and discovery'. In the first half term we will be exploring the minibeasts that can be found in the forest, looking at where they live, naming them and matching photographs and pictures of them. We will then discover what they eat, through looking at various stories including, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and 'The Very Happy Bee'. The children will plant flowers and beans to look at how they grow and will watch the lifecycle of caterpillars as we look after them in class.
In the second half term we will explore different types of transport and how they work. We will also discover different sports in preparation for Sports Day and the upcoming Olympics.
In class we use a total communication approach, using spoken word, sign (Signalong) and visual pictures. The children respond very well to these as well as the use of 'now and next' and their schedules, which help them to transition from one activity to another. If you wish to learn some sign yourself the link below will take you to the Signalong website in which you can register for a free account.

There is also an app called Sign Studio which can be downloaded onto your devices.
We currently have a sign of the week, which will be published on Seesaw each week, this will be based on a minibeast. There is also a letter of the week, which many children practise saying and writing during the week.
PE is on a Tuesday, however the children complete sensory circuits each day, which involves running, climbing and rolling. Children should still wear their uniform, however this should be comfortable and allow them to perform these activities safely.
The children make full use of the schools’ outside areas, including the woods and field throughout the week. Please ensure that your child has a pair of Wellington boots in school, so that they can access these areas in any weather!
When it is hot and sunny please make sure that you put suncream on your child and provide them with a hat.
How can I help my child?
- sing counting/letter songs and songs which require your child to perform an action, e.g. head, shoulders, knees and toes.
- practise counting up to 10 objects.
- reading books and pointing out different items, encouraging your child to 'point to the...'
- playing 'ready, steady, go' games.
- going on bug hunts in the garden or park
- explore using different types of mark making equipment to draw and colour.
- practise the sign of the week.
- practising getting your child to take their coat off and hang it up.
You should all have access to Seesaw, in which activities are uploaded on a regular basis. Important announcements will also be added, so please ensure you check it regularly.
If you have any questions or queries regarding your child, please don't hesitate to message us on Teachers2parents or seesaw, and we will get back to you as soon as we can.
Thank you for your support
