Hello Dosbarth Tulip Families!
Welcome to SpringTerm for our Year 3/4 class!
Our topic this term is "The Street Beneath Our Feet". We decided to focus on what life was like for children who lived in mining communities in Caerphilly, making comparisons between their lives and our own. We will be finding out how coal was formed and the uses of coal. We will then be exploring the locations of mines located in and around Caerphilly using Google Earth. We will have the opportunity to explore primary sources, including artefacts and photos to investigate what life was like for children in these mining communities. We will carry out our own research to discover what jobs children did down the mines, why children had to work, what their home life was like and what school was like for them.We will present our work during showcase week, where we will invite parents to watch our class assembly.
Maths will focus on written methods of addition and subtraction, time, one place decimals, negative numbers and reading scales. We will continue to revise place value and times tables.
Our P.E. days are as follows:
Tuesday – Outdoor P.E.
Thursday – Indoor P.E.
Please wear trainers & joggers as normal uniform. No special kit needed
Digital Learning Opportunities
Your child has taken home a Digital Learning Passport, containing all their login details, usernames and passwords for the websites we use. (If you ever need another one, just let me know.) Seesaw, Purple Mash, Reading Eggs, TT Rockstars, Accelerated Reader and HWB can all be used and enjoyed at home!
Supporting Learning at Home
Reading: We use Accelerated Reader for reading books. It uses real books not scheme books. Each book is assigned a number and children are told which range of numbers they should read according to their ability. They can read any book within their range. To have a new book, they must score well on a quiz, which tests their understanding of the book. The link to take a quiz is on our Google Classroom page. They may change books whenever they’re ready! They may take a book home to read with you if you sign a slip.
Spelling: Spelling patterns are taught on a Monday and practised daily throughout the week. Children attend Read, Write Inc. sessions as needed and have logins for the Oxford Owl website.
Times Tables: When it comes to times tables, speed AND accuracy are important — the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to do harder calculations. Times Table Rock Stars is a fun and challenging programme designed to help your child master the times tables! To be a Times Table Rock Star you need to answer any multiplication fact up to 12x12 in less than 3 seconds! You can find the link on our website page. We have a class leader board and certificates are awarded weekly.
Note from Senior Leadership Team:
As we continue to develop and strengthen relationships between parents and staff, please can we ask that you raise any concerns or issues with class teachers in the first instance? This will ensure queries are managed swiftly and effectively. Many thanks for your continued support.
