Hello Dosbarth Chepstow!
Welcome to the webpage for our Year 3/4 class.
Our P.E. day is Tuesday
Just wear normal school uniform but make sure to wear joggers or shorts and trainers.
Our topic this Summer term is Exploration & Discovery. We decided to focus on Chocolate! We will be asking, ‘what is chocolate made of?’ We will learn how cacao grows, where it grows and how it is processed. We will consider the cacoa farmers and Fairtrade. We will learn about the history of chocolate and the timeline of how and when it came to Europe. Who made the first chocolate bar in the UK? We will apply the money skills we learned in Maths last term to learn about the price increases of chocolate. How much has it gone up? Why has the price increased? As part of Expressive Arts, we’ll write a jingle for a chocolate advert. We’ll design our own chocolate wrapper and make some advertising posters. What is Aztec art like? Let’s do our own! We will explore the texture of different fruits through observational drawing and use our curiosity cube to explore a real cacoa pod! To share and celebrate all our learning, parents will be invited in for a chocolate themed ‘Enterprise Day!’ You can relax, eat the chocolate goodies we make and see all our learning and progress. Money raised will be donated to either Water Aid, Fairtrade or a charity of the children’s choice, according to a vote
In PHSE we will look at relationships. We will learn about family roles & responsibilities, friendship issues and how to solve them and keeping safe online. Maths will focus on time, angles, symmetry, area, perimeter, mass, volume, position & movement and decimals – with a dash of Roman numerals to finish. Lots of measures this term! Please revise telling the time with both digital and analogue clocks at home, whenever you have chance.
This term, we are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We may watch the related movies too and compare them to the original story book. We’ll be writing different styles of poetry, instructions, e mails and diaries.
Authentic learning opportunities will include taking part in Earth Day and also the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Big British Spring Clean.’ We will carry out a litter pick of school grounds and graph the materials we find. Why is so much litter made of plastic? As the weather improves, we will make more use of outdoor learning in our school woods area. There will be much fun and competition taking part in Sports Day! With 2024 being an Olympics year, learning and activities for the latter half of the term will focus on that.
Let the games begin!

Our Spring term topic is Sustainability & Citizenship. We will be learning how to reduce our carbon footprint by reducing, reusing and recycling. Carrying out a litter pick in the locality will help us learn more about materials and how waste affects the planet. We will consider why materials are chosen for their uses during the design process and if they’re natural or man-made. We will research and design our own sustainable house and learn about renewable energy and resources. We will design and make an ‘upcycled art project’ and also make recycled paper to use for Easter craft. We will consider what it means to be a good citizen of Caerphilly, Wales and the Earth so that we understand both our rights and responsibilities, show compassion towards others and are aware of what’s going on in the world. We will consider why it’s important to follow rules and laws to show respect to other people and our environment. In PHSE we will look at our dreams and goals and how to keep healthy and safe. Maths will mainly focus on multiplication, division and fractions, Literacy on writing stories and fact files.
Authentic learning opportunities will include taking part in the RSPB’s Big Bird Watch, Safer Internet Day and British Science Week – including entering the poster competition! There will be much fun celebrating St Dwynwen’s Day, World Book Day, St David’s Day and Easter!
How WILL we fit it all into ten weeks?
Mrs Bounds
This Spring term, we are reading Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown, The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and Green City by Allan Drummond. We’ll watch The Iron Giant movie too and compare it to the book.
