Motor cars

Read Grandad's memory of his family’s first car (session resources) and discuss his feelings about having a car, as well as the informal driving test!

There were only 8,000 cars in the whole of Britain at the start of the 20th century. By the end of the century the car population had soared to 21 million. The beginning of the boom was in the 50s and 60s when cars became relatively cheaper and people were recovering financially after the war. Increase in car travel lead to the first motorway being built in 1958.

Think about whether or not we should build more? Why? Why not?

Think about the advantages and disadvantages of motorways.

TASK:

Make a list of features of a modern car which would NOT have been available in 50s (e.g. sensors which help you reverse by telling you when you are close to another car or a wall, DVD players with screens in the back of headsets, sockets/bluetooth for Phones). Then also write a list of features you would like cars to have in the future!
